Mac OS uses the speed of solid state RAM to alleviatecommon data bottlenecks. The Memory control panel canallocate an area in RAM for storing the contents and results of aprevious hard disk search. The cache provides an alternate area forthe system to check before going to the disk. During subsequentsearches, if the system finds requested information in the cache, adisk search is not required, saving potential hard disk seek time andspeeding up the retrieval process.
Operations that require repetitive pieces of information to be loadedand unloaded are ideal for cache storage. Because Mac OS builds andruns its applications by loading and unloading resources in small,discrete chunks of code, it is an ideal system for caching. However,operations that require accessing large chunks of information spreadout unevenly over the hard disk defeat the purpose of a cache. Largeword processing or database systems may actually slow downperformance because the system must check both the user-definable DiskCache and the disk buffer.
As a rule of thumb, you want to set the Disk Cache at the ratio of32KB for every megabyte of physical memory inyour Mac OS computer. Thus, if you have a 4MB system, a cache settingof 128KB would be normal. For an 8MB system, a setting of 256KB willbe normal.
Note: Settings above 512KB may degrade performance onmany older PPC computers and all 68k Macs. For example, if you have32MB of physical memory in a Quadra 660AV, the highest setting youwould want to use is 512KB, even though with the 32KB per megabyterule you would think it should be 1024KB. On newer PPC computers,especially any running Mac OS 8 or higher, you can get betterperformance out of higher cache settings. The default setting isusually best. To set the default setting, from the Memorycontrol panel, click Default.

Are the Pages and Numbers apps that I originally bought on iTunes for iPad for $9.99 each transferrable to or able to run on 2011 MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.5? The mac app store wants $19.99 each to download. I thought the new operating system was supposed to run the iPhone and iPad apps. My Mac shows the apps in iCloud drive but only opens them in preview. Any way to run these without paying twice for the same app, also curious what apps other people are using in place of these. I use them mostly for basic lists or to open word/excel docs. Thanks.
